8/11/2023 0 Comments New creativerse codes![]() At the same time, RA can also be a major pain in the ass compared to a standalone emulator, it can introduce new bugs in the emulators (as libretro cores), and there are good reasons to not use it - it won't replace standalone emulators. Features that people want and may have to wait for indefinitely to be introduced on a standalone emulator basis, e.g. If all RA did was repack emulators under its own branding, that's one thing, but the software provides features that are additive to the emulators it relies on. From there come the claims that RA parasitic, damaging to emulation, a plague on our houses, and so on. A lot of the discontent is built around that original sin. A standalone emulator needs to be reassembled as a core that plugs into all/most of RA's functionality. RA doesn't simply overlay its front-end onto the emulator or even hook into it in the way something like Special K does. I haven't scoured the internet for Discord logs myself to confirm or not.Ī fair share of the issues surrounding RA are kind of scene drama, where emu devs don't like that their open source/GPL emulator is forked into a libretro core. And to get ahead of it, I'm not saying the libretro/RA lead isn't an asshole. So, I've seen this come up now and then, and my post is mostly in reference to that discourse in general rather than your comment specifically. ![]() ![]() But usually then it'd be DRM free or tied to Steam. But then again, on occasion a digital storefront will sometimes cease to be, especially if it's a small studio selling their own product. The whole argument strikes me as a level of paranoia of people who say they don't trust Steam or other stores to buy from besides GOG where if the store goes down your purchases would be gone, but at least GOG you can back up yourself and always have access to. Plus I still don't know how anyone could steal a steam account even with root access with steamguard attached, it's not like you can just change your password or edit your account without verifying through that authentication first which would require another device. There's probably some actions you can do to mitigate it, but it's a pretty small risk, I'd put it akin to purchasing something online off a new site you never heard of maybe and doing a little internet searching first to see if they're legit enough to make the purchase. I see the argument that since emudeck also needs root access, if you're using emudeck at that point caring about decky is a bit silly, but I imagine you don't use emudeck for the same reason.Īlso decky's source code and all plugin source code is online, so isn't there a way to just scan that - or at the very least if you're using a known version that wasn't updated yesterday, and disable updates for quite a while (like a month, or simply don't update until there's a need) that should at least ensure that some theoretical hacked pushed update would miss you. Or changing your DNS, or pinning the wrong cert, or whatever. If decky addons have root like someone upthread said they might (I haven't looked into it) they can do literally anything, including, say, forcing / spoofing a logout and intercepting your login attempt. Steam accounts are valuable and if decky was super popular (I have no idea) you have a execution rights on a large userbase of computers that are guaranteed to have steam on them. ![]() I never said people had done it, I'm saying that it's a low effort high value thing to do, where low effort means comparatively to something more targeted. I doubt there are that many decky users honestly, it hasn't been around long enough for the kind of addon rot I'm thinking of (where a legitimate addon gets a large userbase, and gets sold to a malicious actor or gets infected via malicious transitive dependencies or whatever), and hopefully before it gets to that point decky will implement systems to prevent it (eg sandboxed addons, reviews, certification / vuln scaning, etc). TBC I'm not saying this is happening or I expect it to happen.
